Sam Levene played the Broadway part of a harried TV quiz show producer who is anxious to divorce his current wife and remarry his first wife. He needs two hundred thousand dollars for the settlement which he is confident of getting from future profits of his show, "Make a Million." However, his prize contestant, a simple Southern girl, becomes pregnant without benefit of clergy. She knows only that the father is a soldier named John. The sponsor will cancel the show unless the girl is married at once, and after a frantic search the soldier is found. The soldier agrees to marry the girl when he discovers she could make a million dollars, but she changes her mind when she learns that the boy does not really love her. However, she is tricked into agreeing to the marriage when the producer stages a fake suicide attempt by the soldier on the window ledge of the penthouse office. When the ex-wife, who is also the producer's secretary, discovers this hoax, she threatens to walk out. The producer then finds a way to rid himself of the soldier so that the Southern girl can marry her hometown sweetheart, the boy she really loves.

stock image, actual book may vary Charles Busch is renowned for weaving popular culture, wicked camp humor, and biting social satire into an unusual and uproarious theatrical signature that has earned him the Outer Critics' John Gassner Award for Playwrighting and a Drama Desk Award for Best Play nomination. Of his latest play, The New York Times has written, "Uproarious ... wall-to-wall laughs ... Mr. Busch has swum straight into the mainstream and stays comfortably afloat there." Busch is the author of such plays as Vampire Lesbians of Sodom -- one of the longest-running plays in Off-Broadway history -- and Psycho Beach Party, a cross between Gidget and Spellbound. After a successful Off-Broadway run at New York City's Manhattan Theater Club, Busch moves to Broadway with The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, a hilarious comedy about a self-absorbed Upper West Side doctor's wife whose life is devoted to mornings at the Whitney, afternoons at the Museum of Modern Art, and evenings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Her world is shaken and transformed when a childhood friend makes an unexpected visit.

stock image, actual book may vary "As time passes," writes John Gassner, "one name among the post-Ibsen dramatists leads all the rest." That one is Anton Chekhov, whose major plays are presented here in the remarkably sensitive and skillful translations of Stark Young. For their penetrating revelation of character, for their sharp and poignant situations and for their compassionate understanding, these plays embody the method and the spirit that have made Chekhov world -famous. His ability to convert commonplace events into universal experience, his pervasive humor and his unfailing insight make him not only one of the greatest of dramatists, but also one of the most revered.
