stock image, actual book may vary Seldom out of the news for long, code-breaking has had a bad time in the media so far, readers and viewers often finding it as perplexing as it is intriguing. As one of the greatest achievements of the century, code- breaking is a fascinating story, but all too often misunderstood and felt to be obscure. The author covers the story from the early code-breaking efforts through the rickety structure of the pre-war Government Code and Cypher School to Bletchley Park where a large powerful organisation arose, unscrambling thousands of secret enemy messages every day. Detailing how these amazing discoveries were actually used, taking us briefly into some of the battles of the Second World War, and in some detail the Battle of the Atlantic, when Britain was in danger of starving and where the war was nearly lost. For the first time, the code-breaking story with all its complexities is told in a straightforward and readable manner, whilst at the same time it will not fail to intrigue and astonish readers.

stock image, actual book may vary In the tradition of New York Times bestsellers In Harm's Way and The Terrible Hours comes a mesmerizing, high-adrenaline account of the heroic sailors who survived one of the worst accidents in U.S. naval history. Sailors to the End tells the dramatic and until now forgotten story of the 1967 fire on board the USS Forrestal during its time at Yankee Station off the coast of Vietnam. The aircraft carrier, the mightiest of the U.S. fleet, was preparing to launch attacks into North Vietnam when one of its jets accidentally fired a rocket across the flight deck and into an aircraft occupied by pilot John McCain. A huge fire ensued, and McCain barely escaped before a 1,000-pound bomb on his plane exploded, causing a chain reaction with other bombs on surrounding planes. The crew struggled for days to extinguish the fires, the five thousand men on board experiencing different kinds of hell -- some trapped in damaged compartments waiting to die, some battling rivers of flaming jet fuel in order to rescue their buddies. Almost all of them were innocent eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds, but in an instant they were thrust into a tragedy that nearly destroyed the ship and took the lives of 134 men. Written with the intensity and excitement of a thriller, and based on never-before-disclosed information and extensive interviews with the fire's survivors, here is the first full, minute-by-minute account of the disaster. Told through the stories of a dozen sailors, including John Beling, the carrier's beloved captain who was made a scapegoat for the disaster, Sailors to the End follows the Forrestal from its home in Norfolk, Virginia, through its mission in Vietnam. Focusing on the fateful fire and its aftermath, this book provides a gripping tale of heartache and heroism as young men find themselves trapped on a burning ship with bombs exploding all around them. Sailors to the End also corrects the official view of the fire, providing evidence that the U.S. government compromised the ship's safety by insisting on increased bombing despite the shortage of reliable weapons. For thirty-five years, the terrible loss of life has been blamed on the sailors themselves, but this meticulously documented history shows that they were truly the victims and heroes, deserving recognition for their efforts during a sweeping tragedy that until now has been only a footnote in history. Gregory A. Freeman dramatically brings this story to life, creating a work that is both riveting and moving.

stock image, actual book may vary With The Years of Extermination , Saul Friedl nder completes his major historical work on Nazi Germany and the Jews. The book describes and interprets the persecution and murder of the Jews throughout occupied Europe. The enactment of German extermination policies and measures depended on the cooperation of local authorities, the assistance of police forces, and the passivity of the populations, primarily of their political and spiritual elites. This implementation depended as well on the victims readiness to submit to orders, often with the hope of attenuating them or of surviving long enough to escape the German vise. This multifaceted study at all levels and in different places enhances the perception of the magnitude, complexity, and interrelatedness of the many components of this history. Based on a vast array of documents and an overwhelming choir of voices mainly from diaries, letters, and memoirs Saul Friedl nder avoids domesticating the memory of these unprecedented and horrific events. The convergence of these various aspects gives a unique quality to The Years of Extermination . In this work, the history of the Holocaust has found its definitive represen

Some Chipping. Book #or1169790. ISBN #070060409X / 9780700604098. (filed under: World War 2 ) * In World War II, few American soldiers equalled the gallantry of the Army's airborne divisions. These forces were often dropped behind enemy lines, and despite casualties they triumphed in some of the bloodiest fighting of the war, including the Battle of the Bulge. One such paratrooper was Kurt Gabel, and this is his story. In "The Making of a Paratrooper" Gabel conveys both the dangers of combat and his transformation from romantic idealist to warrior. At the same time, he illuminates the collective experiences of his unit - the 17th Airborne's 513th Regiment. Here, too, he tells the story of Bastogne of "Dead Man's Ridge". Gabel was a German Jew who emigrated to Hollywood in 1938, and after some difficulty enlisted in the Airborne. His account details the days of basic training and jump school. Overseas, in late 1944 Gabel underwent his baptism by fire - at the Battle of the Bulge. He recounts narrow escapes from numerous fire fights, separation from his battalion and rescue by another only to be thrust right back into combat , assignment to an intelligence unit and interrogation of German prisoners. There are personal moments as well, like the discovery of family photos and letters on a dead German soldier and the stacking of frozen corpses - "like cordwood" - onto a truck.

stock image, actual book may vary The bomb that exploded in the "Wolf's Lair" Hitler's command headquarters on July 20th, 1944 was the closest any assassination attempt ever came to ridding the world of the Nazis' F hrer. Pierre Galante's account of the years that led up to the attempt, and its grim aftermath, offers an illuminating look at how dissent among the German officer corps grew until something had to be done. Conspirator General Adolf Heusinger, who met with Hitler on hundreds of occasions, provides his personal accounts of the disintegrating obedience of the German commanders as the war turned against them. Their plan to kill Hitler, establish a provisional government, and negotiate with the Allies for peace known as Operation Valkyrie is described here in depth.
