McCormick, Ken Images Of War: The Artist's Vision Of World War II Orion Books 1990 hardcover. BOOK COND: Used; Very Good. JACKET COND: Used; Very Good. Book #or1170271. ISBN #0517570653 / 9780517570654. (filed under: World War 2 ) * . While most of the world went to war with guns and ammunition, there were others who carried brushes and paint to the fray. Although little known at the time-and barely remembered half a century later-artists from all nations committed to paper or canvas their impressions of the immense events of which they were part. No war in history was as widely chronicled in art as was World War II.Some artists were commissioned by their governments or armed forces to record the battles, while others just felt the need to express their vision of the war. Some were already famous, and some became famous after-ward. Others made no subsequent mark on the art world, and still others never made it home at all.Ken McCormick and Hamilton Darby Perry, assisted by a team of researchers, have selected an exemplary sampling of these artworks-most of them never before published. The result is a powerful and moving look at a time when it seemed that war reached everywhere and touched everyone-from the front lines to the supply lines; from the foxholes and the gun turrets to the loading docks, mess tents, and hospitals; from bombed-out cities and refugee-swollen roads to home-front factories and war-bond raffles. This is a truly international collection-one that represents some 200 artists from a dozen countries-chosen from among the thousands and thousands of artworks hanging in museums and tucked away in archives. We see the war from every viewpoint. Of special note is a generous selection of paintings from the Soviet Union, most of them never before available to the West.Throughout, the art is married to a text of excerpted eyewitness accounts and dispatches-verbal sketches, that complement the immediacy of the potent images. This collection offers a highly charged look at the harshness of war, devastation of war, triumph, the fear, industriousness, sorrow, boredom, glory, stolen moments, waste, and grief of war-all as they've never been seen before

stock image, actual book may vary World War II at Sea, using a fine selection of contemporary pictures, looks again at most of the major naval engagements fought between 1939 and 1945 and asks whether everything was as clear cut as earlier accounts have suggested. For instance, how many battles might have had a different outcome if one side or the other had had better communications, or better intelligence, or just that little bit of extra luck? World War II at Sea considers whether those involved fully appreciated the role of aerial reconnaissance, of carrier tactics and of the submarine, the latter proving all but decisive in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. It also examines whether there was too great an emphasis on destroyers fighting U-bots, and not enough on the safe and timely arrival of convoys. Finally, this book asks the reader to bear in mind the importance of a factor so often ignored in naval histories: the role of the sea itself.

stock image, actual book may vary In the first of two volumes on the American contribution to the Allied victory at Normandy, John C. McManus examines, with great intensity and thoroughness, the American experience in the weeks leading up to D-Day and on the great day itself. From the build up in England to the night drops of airborne forces behind German lines and the landings on the beaches at dawn, from the famed figures of Eisenhower, Bradley, and Lightin' Joe Collins to the courageous, but little-known privates who fought so bravely, and under terrifying conditions, this is the story of the American experience at D-Day. What were the battles really like for the Americans at Utah and Omaha? What drove them to fight despite all adversity? How and why did they triumph? Thanks to extensive archival research, and the use of hundreds of first hand accounts, McManus answers these questions and many more. Impressively researched, engrossing, lightning quick, and filled with human sorrow and elation, The Americans at D-Day honors those Americans who lost their lives on D-Day, as well as those who were fortunate enough to survive.

stock image, actual book may vary A white-knuckle account of the 1st Infantry Division s harrowing D-Day assault on the eastern sector of Omaha Beach acclaimed historian John C. McManus has written a gripping history that will stand as the last word on this titanic battle. Nicknamed the Big Red One, 1st Division had fought from North Africa to Sicily, earning a reputation as stalwart warriors on the front lines and rabble-rousers in the rear. Yet on D-Day, these jaded combat veterans melded with fresh-faced replacements to accomplish one of the most challenging and deadly missions ever. As the men hit the beach, their equipment destroyed or washed away, soldiers cut down by the dozens, courageous heroes emerged: men such as Sergeant Raymond Strojny, who grabbed a bazooka and engaged in a death duel with a fortified German antitank gun; T 5 Joe Pinder, a former minor-league pitcher who braved enemy fire to save a vital radio; Lieutenant John Spalding, a former sportswriter, and Sergeant Phil Streczyk, a truck driver, who together demolished a German strong point overlooking Easy Red, where hundreds of Americans had landed. Along the way, McManus explores the Gap Assault Team engineers who dealt with the extensive mines and obstacles, suffering nearly a fifty percent casualty rate; highlights officers such as Brigadier General Willard Wyman and Colonel George Taylor, who led the way to victory; and punctures scores of myths surrounding this long-misunderstood battle. The Dead and Those About to Die draws on a rich array of new or recently unearthed sources, including interviews with veterans. The result is history at its finest, the unforgettable story of the Big Red One s nineteen hours of hell and their ultimate triumph on June 6, 1944. INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS

stock image, actual book may vary In mid-1943 James Megellas, known as Maggie to his fellow paratroopers, joined the 82d Airborne Division, his new home for the duration. His first taste of combat was in the rugged mountains outside Naples. In October 1943, when most of the 82d departed Italy to prepare for the D-Day invasion of France, Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, the Fifth Army commander, requested that the division s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Maggie s outfit, stay behind for a daring new operation that would outflank the Nazis stubborn defensive lines and open the road to Rome. On 22 January 1944, Megellas and the rest of the 504th landed across the beach at Anzio. Following initial success, Fifth Army s amphibious assault, Operation Shingle, bogged down in the face of heavy German counterattacks that threatened to drive the Allies into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Anzio turned into a fiasco, one of the bloodiest Allied operations of the war. Not until April were the remnants of the regiment withdrawn and shipped to England to recover, reorganize, refit, and train for their next mission. In September, Megellas parachuted into Holland along with the rest of the 82d Airborne as part of another star-crossed mission, Field Marshal Montgomery s vainglorious Operation Market Garden. Months of hard combat in Holland were followed by the Battle of the Bulge, and the long hard road across Germany to Berlin. Megellas was the most decorated officer of the 82d Airborne Division and saw more action during the war than most. Yet All the Way to Berlin is more than just Maggie s World War II memoir. Throughout his narrative, he skillfully interweaves stories of the other paratroopers of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The result is a remarkable ac
