stock image, actual book may vary One of the most respected journalists in the United States and the bestselling author of The Future Church uses his unparalleled knowledge of world affairs and religious insight to investigate the troubling worldwide persecution of Christians. From Iraq and Egypt to Sudan and Nigeria, from Indonesia to the Indian subcontinent, Christians in the early 21st century are the world's most persecuted religious group. According to the secular International Society for Human Rights, 80 percent of violations of religious freedom in the world today are directed against Christians. In effect, our era is witnessing the rise of a new generation of martyrs. Underlying the global war on Christians is the demographic reality that more than two-thirds of the world's 2.3 billion Christians now live outside the West, often as a beleaguered minority up against a hostile majority-- whether it's Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia, Hindu radicalism in India, or state-imposed atheism in China and North Korea. In Europe and North America, Christians face political and legal challenges to religious freedom. Allen exposes the deadly threats and offers investigative insight into what is and can be done to stop these atrocities. This book is about the most dramatic religion story of the early 21st century, yet one that most people in the West have little idea is even happening: The global war on Christians, writes John Allen. We re not talking about a metaphorical war on religion in Europe and the United States, fought on symbolic terrain such as whether it s okay to erect a nativity set on the courthouse steps, but a rising tide of legal oppression, social harassment and direct physical violence, with Christians as its leading victims. However counter-intuitive it may seem in light of popular stereotypes of Christianity as a powerful and sometimes oppressive social force, Christians today indisputably form the most persecuted religious body on the planet, and too often its new martyrs suffer in silence. This book looks to shatter that silence.

stock image, actual book may vary Not just in words, but in art, dance, music and silence -- this book is the perfect overview for viewing divinity from every perspective. The history of God cannot possibly be told. How can you write the history of One who is outside time and space, and who has no beginning and no end? Nevertheless, the desire to understand and experience the divine is a fundamental human need. For billions of people, through many millennia, the quest to answer the basic questions of existence -- Why are we born? What will happen to us when we die? and how should we live out lives? -- has become a search for God. A Brief History of God explores the myriad ways in which humans have sought connection to the divine from the dawn of history to the present -- not just through religion and philosophy, but in art and literature, in music and dance, and in science.

stock image, actual book may vary Discover the Power of Dialogue to Heal Religious Division How can members of different faith traditions approach each other with openness and respect? How can they confront the painful conflicts in their history and overcome theological misconceptions? For more than twenty years, Professors Mary C. Boys and Sara S. Lee have explored ways that Catholics and Jews might overcome mistrust and misunderstandings in order to promote commitment to religious pluralism. At its best, interreligious dialogue entails not simply learning about the other from the safety of one s own faith community, but rather engaging in specific learning activities with members of the other faith learning in the presence of the other. Drawing upon examples from their own experience, Boys and Lee lay out a framework for engaging the religious other in depth. With vision and insight, they discuss ways of fostering relationships among participants and with key texts, beliefs and practices of the other s tradition. In this groundbreaking resource, they offer a guide for members of any faith tradition who want to move beyond the rhetoric of interfaith dialogue and into the demanding yet richly rewarding work of developing new understandings of the religious other and of one s own tradition.

stock image, actual book may vary For publicity events and speaking engagements, see http: www.paulgordonchandler.com schedule.htm. Today's tensions between the 'Islamic' East and 'Christian' West run high. Here Paul-Gordon Chandler presents fresh thinking in the area of Christian-Muslim relations, showing how Christ_whom Islam reveres as a Prophet and Christianity worships as the divine Messiah_can close the gap between the two religions. Historically, Christians have taken a confrontational or missionary approach toward Islam, leading many Muslims to identify Christianity with the cultural prejudices and hegemonic ambitions of Westerners. On the individual level, Christ-followers within Islam have traditionally been encouraged by Christians to break away from their Muslim communities. Chandler boldly explores how these two major religions_which share much common heritage_can not only co-exist, but also enrich each other. He illustrates his perspective with examples from the life of Syrian novelist Mazhar Mallouhi, widely read in the Middle East. Mallouhi, a self-identified 'Sufi Muslim follower of Christ,' seeks to bridge the chasm of misunderstanding between Muslims and Christians through his novels.

stock image, actual book may vary everything from facts to pop quizzes to polls, World Religions offers fascinating trivia about spirituality. Here are just a few of the interesting facts you'll find in World Religions: Early in the 7th century, a 40-year-old merchant named Muhammad ibn Abdallah began receiving revelations from God. Muhammad's revelations, which make up the Quran, and an extensive record of his life, called the Hadith, are the two central documents at the core of Islam. The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations calls itself a "non-creedal" faith, because it accepts people of a wide variety of beliefs-including theists and atheists. For a thousand years after the death of Jesus, his followers were members of a unified church. More than 100 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been published in more than 93 languages. Dance and music are highly valued in the Hindu world as expressions of divinity. Ever wonder whether Jehovah's Witnesses believe in an afterlife? Or what is the largest Roman Catholic church in the world? You'll find the answers inside . . . and many more ABOUT THE AUTHOR In Boy Scout camp at the age of twelve, Victor Dorff was taught that everyone belonged to one of three groups: Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish. No one was exempt from weekly services, so he decided to attend them all. As an adult, his exploration of faith revealed a broader range of choices. He integrated that journey into his professional life-from Stanford Law School to ABC News, from entrepreneur to educator, from Internet pioneer to cofounder of Charity Checks. Today, Dorff is a consultant and world traveler who teaches math and axiomatic thinking, writes books, and has an Internet column on academic integrity.

stock image, actual book may vary The current return to spiritual values has spawned a surge of interest in the ancient goddess-based religions as a remedy to a long tradition of misogyny in the Western religions. But how accurate are these current representations of the goddess in polytheism? And did Judeo-Christian religion really turn its back on women? These are some of the questions that scholar and feminist Tivka Frymer-Kensky sets out to answer in this iconoclastic study of gender in religions past and present. Her argument, illustrated with fascinating accounts of myth and ritual dating back to the early days of Sumer, Assyria, and Greece, is that although polytheism did accord females an important role, the strict division between male and female actually served to keep women in a subordinate position. The goddesses were progressively "ghettoized": their sphere was eventually relegated to home and hearth, while male gods took over as patrons of wisdom and learning. This dualism was displaced by the Bible, which embraced a surprisingly egalitarian view of human nature in which women were not considered to be inherently inferior. In a provocative work of biblical scholarship on gender and sexuality, Frymer-Kensky shows that the ideal of monotheism may offer far more to us today than a return to the gender-based worldview of the goddess religions.

stock image, actual book may vary Today, with all of the controversies surrounding religion in the schools and in the public sphere, it would seem more important than ever that teachers and librarians have a quick source to up to date, correct, unbiased information to give to patrons and students and to inform their classroom practices. The authors of this book all are or have been professors of religion at various well known universities do just that. Using this dictionary of religion and culture, teacher will have access to the understanding they need to build unbiased classrooms. The idea for this book came out of the experience of practicing classroom teachers in public schools as they tried to build classroom environments grounded in respect for the many cultures and religions represented. In his foreword for the book, school administrator, David Hubbard discusses the need to develop the trained eye in educators so that they can see their classrooms from the perspective of persons from all religious beliefs. The book is arranged to cover most all of the known and little known religions in America from the Bahai Faith to Zoroastrianism. Each section covers topics: Origins, Beliefs, Sacred Book Scriptures, Practices, Main Subgroups, Common Misunderstandings and Stereotypes, Classroom Concerns, Population Data and Further Readings as well as noting current web page addresses if available. Though there are many guides to religions in America, this book has the unique niche of looking at each religion as it may affect teacher practice in the classroom and other student groups-thus its appeal to public and school libraries as well as classroom teachers and other youth leaders.

stock image, actual book may vary With numerous examples from cultures around the world, Religion: A Cross-Cultural Dictionary documents, describes, and explains both the commonalities and differences in how people experience and express their religious beliefs and spirituality. Clear and concise articles explain the varied philosophies, dogma, practices, and origins of the sixteen religions with worldwide following. Dozens of other articles provide a handy reference to both patterns of similarity and difference in religious practice across the cultures of the world. All cultures, for example, have beliefs in supernatural beings, religious leaders, and burial rituals, but they differ widely in their beliefs about the evil eye, dream interpretation, and the power of sorcerers. Reasons for these similarities and differences are discussed, with fascinating cross-cultural examples of religious customs and practices. Many unifying themes surface as author David Levinson shows how people around the world express their relationship to the supernatural world. These patterns of relationship include those based on soul journeys, possession by spirits, magical formulas, beliefs in god and goddesses, concepts about the after life, and taboos on eating certain foods. Providing a thorough chronology of the history of religion beginning with the emergence of shamanism some 50,000 years ago, this carefully researched book is essential for anyone interested in humanity's religious and spiritual diversity.
